Another casino group is offering up a bad bet for Ohio's voters

I don't always agree with everything Thomas Suddes has to say, he defiantly nails it with this column.

No matter how you cut it, or roll the dice, gambling is a bad idea for Ohio.

I just wish our Governor would make up his mind. First he's 100% against it, then he's for it, sort of. Now he's against it again.

Priceless

The Athens News' Terry Smith has finally come to the realization that having good intentions doesn't qualify one to be Governor.

At least he's honest. Here's today's Athens News and Terry's column.

"After all this, the people of southeast Ohio who had long tolerated schools with minimal financial resources, always seemingly on the verge of insolvency, excitedly awaited the governor’s reform plan. It had been a long trek through the desert, but finally, the promised land was at hand.
Um, well, no. In the district-by-district breakdown released last week by the governor’s office, here’s how Athens County’s school districts fare under the Strickland education plan:

• Alexander Local School District: No increase in money in fiscal year 2010 and a 2 percent reduction in 2011.

• Federal Hocking School District: 0 percent change in 2010 and 2 percent reduction in 2011.
Nelsonville York City School District: 0 percent change in 2010 and 2 percent reduction in 2011.
Trimble Local School District: 0 percent change in 2010 and 2 percent reduction in 2011.
• Athens City School District, (the most prosperous school district in the county): 0 percent change in 2010 and 1 percent increase in 2011.

We’re going to hear a lot of statistical hocus-pocus to explain this but there’s no getting around the fact that schools that have always been considered the ones most unfairly treated under the old system won’t get any new money under the new one, and actually will have to absorb 2 percent reductions.

This is an outrage, and Appalachia Ohio’s native son Ted Strickland should be forced to come up with an explanation."

What must hurt Terry even more is the fact that the Athens News endorsed Strickland and one of the main reasons was his promise of "improved support for education."

"Strickland would accomplish some of his goals -- including more early-childhood education, a focus on science and math instruction, a more effective system of public-private college savings accounts, guaranteed tuition rates -- through tinkering with the funding system. He would try to make it fairer and simpler"

"Strickland is a good man with a sincere desire to improve Ohio's sorry state"

One has to wonder now, that since the Athens News endorsed Strickland and he's turned out to be a disappointment, who else did they endorse that has failed them?

How about Debbie Phillips? Here's The Athens News endorsement of her State Representative candidacy.

"Education is Phillips’ strong suit, as the founder and executive director of the Ohio Fair Schools Campaign. She has an intimate working knowledge of the complex ins and outs of Ohio’s ineffective system for funding schools, and can be depended upon to apply that knowledge in Columbus. She will work with the governor, and hopefully a Democratic majority House of Representatives, to finally reform our unfair system for funding schools."

The Athens News was wrong about her also.

Yes, she's only been a State Representative for a short time, however, Strickland's education funding "plan", looks like it came from Debbie Phillips and her Ohio Fair Schools Campaign, which she was the founder and executive director. It looks like Strickland and Phillips were holding hands while putting this plan together. Take a look at the Ohio Fair Schools Campaign website and see how many initiatives have made it into Strickland's proposal. (It looks like the Ohio Fair Schools Campaign website hasn't been updated since last year, which would lead one to believe that it was purely a vehicle in which Debbie Phillips rode to a State Representative seat.)

While many of the districts she represents are getting funding cuts, see list above, the school she attended (Upper Arlington) is getting 15% and 16% increases over the next two years.

Phillips and Strickland are equally responsible for this debacle of a "school funding plan". The dems have been demagoguing this issue for the past 12-15 years. After all this time, this is the best they could come up with?

While Phillips and Strickland are responsible for this mess, it's up to the voters to hold them accountable on election day.

After this track record of endorsements from the Athens News, one would think that voters should vote against those they've endorsed....for the most part. They get 1 or 2 out of 100 right.

And yes, Terry, you are a liberal.

Unbiased headline

Is the Democrat party writing the headlines for stories in the Marietta Times?

"Ohio Democrats want to create jobs" Maybe it's just me, but the first thought that came to mind was the implication that the Republicans don't want to create jobs. What the headline should have said was "Ohio Democrats want to create government jobs".

A couple of thoughts on this story:

1.

"Sen. Jimmy Stewart, R-Athens, said Monday he's willing to look at Democratic proposals, but has some reservations. For example, he favors the veteran bonus plan vetoed by Gov. Ted Strickland, which would have paid for the bonuses out of the state's rainy day fund.
"The bill that we passed used current resources... instead of going deeper in debt," Stewart said."

Contrast this sentiment to Rep. Charlie Wilson's (D) deficit spending and it's a breath of fresh air.

2.

"Stewart said he's not opposed to the idea but believes fixing the state's unconstitutional education system is the priority and he's skeptical of Strickland's plan.
"That would be helpful," Stewart said of the distance learning initiative, "but what would be even more helpful was if the governor's school funding plan wasn't taking money from some of the poorest districts in the state....""

Then you have Strickland and Debbie Phillips telling us they had an "education funding plan" and they were going to fix "school funding". Then when the "plan" is revealed, it actually reduces funding to many schools in Appalachia....some of the poorest in the state. What kind of a fix is that? As Jimmy stated in another story recently that the Strickland / Phillips plan would actually increase the dependence on property taxes in some districts. This is the main reason Strickland and Phillips said we needed to "fix" school funding in the first place. What they've done is actually made our school funding situation worse.

I hope Strickland and Debbie Phillips don't try to fix anything else!

Rep. Wilson tries to defend his vote on the Porkulas bill

Below is his own statement on his shameful vote on raising our national debt $819 Billion. He'll have another chance to vote on this after the House and Senate "reconcile" their two versions of this travesty. Who wants to bet a Coke that it's higher after they're done "reconciling"?

I've added a few comments in blue.

Wilson on Economic Stimulus Bill

Posted: 2:51 PM Jan 29, 2009Last Updated: 2:51 PM Jan 29, 2009

THIS IS A PRESS RELEASE FROM THE OFFICE OF OHIO CONGRESSMAN CHARLIE WILSON.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today Congressman Charlie Wilson voted to put Americans back to work, create 3 to 4 million jobs and jumpstart our economy. The U.S. House passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 with a vote of 244 to 188.

Developed with the Obama Administration (Karl Marx et al), this recovery and job creation package will rebuild America (you mean refinance the democrat supporters) , make us more globally competitive and energy independent, and transforming our economy for long-term growth; give 95 percent of American workers an immediate tax cut (what you mean is, take money from folks that pay taxes and give to folks that don't pay taxes via the "earned income tax credit" and call it a tax cut) ; and invest quickly in the economy.
“I was happy to see the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act pass the House today,” Wilson said. “I believe the plan will help us reverse the current economic meltdown. Some have complained that the plan is too big; others have complained that it isn’t big enough. (really, who? a false "compromise") ; As with all legislation, this represents a compromise and I believe we worked hard to develop a plan whose results will be felt in every community in this country. Ohio could receive billions of dollars in federal funds.(Put on the feed bag boys, we're printing money!) That’s huge, and I will do everything in my power to make sure working families and businesses in my district get their fair share of it. (fair share of a massive debt bill? No thanks) It is only fair that the communities that have been the most devastated by recent economic woes get the help they have needed for so long,” said Wilson. (and here he is with your "help", he's here to help you and buy your vote)
“I’m also pleased that the plan includes numerous tax credits that will directly benefit millions of Ohio’s working families and businesses,” Wilson added.
Some of the initial estimates for Ohio include:

Do any of these create jobs in the short term.......in the long term for that matter?

$2,826,874 for Ohio’s Medicaid program. NO
$756 million in Food Stamps to help 1,209,000 Ohio families. NO
$147.2 million to help 257,900 Ohioans who receive Supplemental Security Income NO
$66.1 million to help an additional 16,000 Ohio families take advantage of the Emergency Shelter Grant Program NO
666,416 Ohio workers who’ve lost their jobs will be able to collect additional Unemployment Insurance in 2009. NO
$2,385,026,000 for Ohio’s State Fiscal Stabilization Fund. NO, what this does is let Ohio get around it's balanced budget requirement, just have the federal government invent more money out of thin air and add it to the federal budget deficit.
$472,182,000 for Ohio’s Title I (Disadvantaged Students) NO
$510,428,000 for Ohio’s Individuals with Disabilities Act (Special Education) NO
$36,074,608 for Education Technology State Grants in Ohio NO
$740,000,000 for Education Modernization, Renovation & Repair (both K-12 and Higher Education) in Ohio; NO
$75 million of that would be specifically headed to school districts in Ohio’s Sixth Congressional District. Which will result in massive kickbacks to the dems from the OEA via campaign contributions...using your tax money, of course.
$969,083,888 in Pell Grants to benefit approximately 268,804 college students in Ohio NO
$27,337,915 to for Ohio Head Start NO
$68,140,840 for Ohio’s Child Care & Development Block Grant NO
$155,039,850 for Employment and Training in Ohio NO
$39,979,274 for Ohio’s Community Services Block Grant NO
$49,915,665 for Low-Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) in Ohio NO
$7,276,756 for Elderly Nutrition Services in Ohio NO
$14,358,180 for Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant in Ohio NO
$93,043,833 for Byrne Justice Assistance Grants (JAG) NO
$1,036,086,707 for Ohio’s Highways and Bridges Maybe, depends on how much the wages are artificially inflated due to union hiring requirements, which costs the tax payers more.
$150,853,656 for Ohio’s Transit Capital Grants Maybe, see previous.
$24,069,335 for Fixed Guideway Modernization in Ohio NO
$326,786,229 for Ohio’s Clean Water State Revolving Grant NO

Where are the jobs promised from this socialist bill? There are very few. A few highway and bridge jobs. All of these programs might sound well intentioned (sounding like a liberal, I know), but if there is no money, is it fair to our kids and grand kids to put them into debt?

Ted Strickland was well known for voting for the largest tax increase in history when he was our US Representative in 1993....now Charlie Wilson (who replaced Strickland) will be known for voting for the largest deficit spending bill in history.

This is a conservative district and needs to have a conservative representative. We need a Frank Cremeans, someone that is not afraid to be a conservative.

Welfare, alive and well on college campuses

Plan recasts state funds for private colleges

"Up to 37,500 students would no longer receive state scholarships to attend private colleges in Ohio under Gov. Ted Strickland's budget proposal."

Why, you ask? You might think that the budget is being cut? Not so.

"Although more money would be allotted for the new block grants -- $70 million, including $30 million for students of for-profit schools"

Here's the reason:

"Three-fourths of the 50,000 Choice Grant students could become ineligible because they or their families earn too much money."

"Eligibility for the Student Choice Grant is not based on need or academic merit." ...well this was the case before Strickland's education plan.

The little help that the "middle class" gets in college financial aid, is now gone, replaced with giving that money to others, based on "needs".

"Instead of requiring a set amount per student, the new program would give private schools the latitude to award different amounts of aid based on students' need, Jones said."

So we've went from a program that was set up to encourage students to stay in Ohio to attend college, to a socialist redistribution of wealth. You didn't know you were wealthy, did you?

This has to be a misprint

""State government must be growing now as we face the worst economic recession in 30 years," Sabety said."

This is either a misprint by the Dispatch, or the dumbest thing I've ever heard a government official say.

Stricklands education plan

"In the midst of fiscal crisis, Ohio governor unveils transformation of education"

Since there are sparse details about this plan, one just has to ask questions:

If we are not going to have a standardized high-school graduation test to allow students to graduate, and we are going to require all to take the ACT, will there be a score requirement to graduate?

Just taking the test means nothing.

Here's a previous post on testing.

One more thought on this. If the OEA loves this proposal, the tax payer should be very wary.

No matter how much money we throw at education (with no corresponding improvements), it will never be enough for the teacher's unions. Of course, as mentioned before, as long as the unions give campaign contributions to democrats...democrats are more than happy to take your money and give it to the unions.

SOOEEE, HERE PIG!

Governor Strickland has found a way to get around that tricky balanced budget requirement in Ohio..... beg the Obama Administration for money from the federal government (taxpayers).

A few thoughts on this (Dispatch story)

Ohio requires a balanced budget. Instead of making the tough decisions (like cutting more spending!), we beg the feds to give us money. So, Ohio doesn't go into debt, the federal government does. How does this help the taxpayers?

Obama tells us not to worry about the size of government, just if it does it's job effectively. If spending our money is doing it's job, it's doing it well enough.

"$67 million for child care" so you now have to pay for your neighbor's child care. Even though you take care of your kids.

Here's another story about this "rescue package", (yes, they phrase these unconstitutional measures in such ways one has to hesitate saying anything against it. Who can be against a "rescue package"?

Why is it that Republicans sound like Republicans only after they have achieved the minority?

""We can't spend our way to prosperity," said Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich."

""Our plan offers fast-acting tax relief, not slow-moving and wasteful government spending," said House Republican Leader John Boehner."

democrats have no issues sounding like democrats regardless if they are in the majority or minority:

""These funds must be applied for, so my message is, 'Wake up, Ohio,' " Kaptur (D-Toledo) said. "If people in our communities and universities and agencies don't apply for this money, we won't get it. It will go to other states and cities. There's a great urgency for mayors and county commissioners to look at this pool of discretionary funds that must be applied for.""

Here Pig, Sooeee!!!

Mr. Strickland, where's your plan?

How long do we have to wait for Governor Strickland to present his "plan" he talked about when he was running for Governor?

“U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, A Democratic Candidate For Governor, Says His Turnaround Ohio Plan Will Rescue The State's Economy.” The Columbus Dispatch, 2/25/06

We are bleeding population to other states due to Ohio having no jobs....which is due to high corporate income tax rates (ranked 48th in 2006).

Having high personal income taxes also shoves people out of Ohio. (ranked 45th)

Here is a story from the Wall Street Journal comparing Ohio and Texas.

The cause of Ohio's woes are obvious:

  • High corporate income tax rates.
  • High personal income tax rates.
  • High death taxes.
  • Unions sucking the last drop of green from the auto companies, (and the OEA sucking the green out of the taxpayers, for that matter).
  • High worker's compensation costs.
  • Recently increased minimum wage....which costs jobs.
So, does Governor Strickland have a plan to correct any of these problems? He claimed to, where is it when we need it? Is the plan to gamble our way out of trouble?

It's time to lead, Governor, not beg the feds for a handout.

Debbie Phillips, she's here to "help" you

So, she thinks it's her job as state representative is to make sure tax payer funded "service providers" don't run into "bureaucratic issues". The state government creates programs and bureaucratic hurdles at the same time. Then we go to our State Representative to help us around these hurdles that the State Representative helped put up in the first place?

Debbie, how about stop providing "services" and just cut our taxes and spending. We'll take care of the rest and provide our own services with our own money that we don't send to Columbus.

By the way, where's her education funding plan? Why is she waiting for uncle Ted to produce his? I thought this was important and she was going to "fix" it for us.

Athens News story
As far as keeping her finger on the pulse of the district, Phillips said she plans to meet regularly with folks within the district who are implementing programs on the ground to make sure that she’s aware of the priorities and any bureaucratic issues that may be causing problems in program implementation. The 92nd House District includes Athens, Morgan and Meigs counties, and the western part of Washington County.
“I’ve already been talking with some of the local service providers and boards that implement state programs to get their side of the fence of the priorities as we head into the budget,” Phillips said. “People are already calling and e-mailing. My office is fully involved with reaching out to state agencies and helping people resolve problems.”

The media is a democrat protection machine

Pretty amazing story.
  1. A social worker
  2. A former director of Ohio's "Faith-Based Initiatives"
  3. An OSU faculty advisor
All in business together to promote sex for money with under age girls.

One thing that is not surprising is how fast the media de-linked Governor Strickland (democrat) from this story. Eric McFadden, the former director of the Governor's Office of Faith-Based Initiatives until sometime in 2007. He was appointed by Strickland....a democrat.
  1. How many appointees like this still work for our state government because of Strickland?
  2. Where was the "vetting" process?
  3. What ages are the kids this "social worker" works with?
  4. Just what is this faculty advisor advising faculty to do?
  5. Why isn't the media asking these questions?

previous post on this subject.

Mountineer Racetrack cut 266 jobs

Mr. Strickaland wants to pin Ohio's future on this business? Detailed in previous post. They have their good years and bad years. It just so happens, their bad years line up with a bad economy.

It's not like Ohio would keep a bank account with all the state proceeds from gambling to be used during the next economic downturn. No, everyone will have their hands in the slop bucket and it will be empty all the time. Can you imagine the OEA seeing a huge pile of money just laying in the bank collecting interest without trying to get their cut?

Mountaineer Racetrack Cuts Another 175 Jobs
Friday, January 16, 2009 – updated: 7:39 pm EST January 17, 2009
Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort officials said Friday they have reduced the facility's work force by 8.6 percent. Officials said 175 jobs have been cut.

And again in Nobember

Mountaineer Cuts 91 Jobs

You can't count on gambling to save our economy. What we need is lower taxes and spending.

Governor Strickland is a Democrat who has recently changed his mind on allowing more gambling in Ohio. He now is ok with "exploring the option".

Community Initiative

We were joking in a previous post that Governor Strickland should promote prostitution, since he's now promoting gambling....which is counter to his previous statements against the vice of gambling.

Well, it looks like one of Strickland's aides beat him to our idea. "Robert Eric McFadden, the director of Strickland's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives until the fall of 2007, was arrested in Dublin this morning. McFadden, 46, lives at 6290 Hyland Drive in Dublin but was not arrested at home. McFadden is charged with seven prostitution-related counts. Among the accusations made by Columbus police: that he promoted prostitution by using online discussions to sing the praises of a prostitute who is 17 years old." "

One wonders what Faith this guy belongs to. I guess one could call this a "Community Initiative".

Strickland is a democrat. I have to tell you since the media generally only mentions a party if it's a Republican involved in something like this. I'm sure this is always just an oversight, because we know the media is not biased.

Gambling Pimps

If at first you don't succeed, enlist a Governor and a Speaker.............

How many times do the voters have to say we don't want gambling in Ohio. Except the lottery, of course. Just a little hypocrisy, but voters have that right.

Ohio House Speaker Armond Budish
"As the beleaguered state looks for money, new House Speaker Armond Budish is willing to consider casino gambling"

Why not legalize marijuana while we're at it? We need the money, we could tax it!!!

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland
"But for Strickland, desperate times call for desperate measures. "I think it is impossible to know how deep this recession is going to be or how long it is going to last," Strickland, a Democrat, said in an interview on Thursday. "I am therefore willing to keep an open mind and listen to whatever argument that may be brought to me regarding gambling.""

So if things get bad enough, we'll legalize anything? Why not prostitution, Ted? The AFSCME union could use the new legal members and their dues could be funnelled back to you via campaign contributions.
Come on Governor, you've always been against gambling. Do your core values change this easy?

You'll notice that both of these men have already met with gambling "officials" I wonder how much campaign money they were promised?

State Representative Jennifer Garrison gets it:
"Garrison said she would be opposed to any expanded gaming in Ohio."I do not support it, and I think voters in Ohio have spoken several times now about how they feel about it," Garrison said. "There are a lot of negative impacts on communities where there is gambling."

I've got an idea if we think our tax money is shrinking: CUT SPENDING. THEN IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH, CUT SPENDING, THEN IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH, CUT SPENDING!

We don't need a gambling ponzi scheme that is proven to harm society.

Strickland, Just when you get mad at him..........

He turns around and governs like the GOP SAY THEY WILL.

Not much to comment on this. Other than why is it when we want a fiscal conservative, we have to look to Strickland?

"Gov. Ted Strickland said he will not support increases in the state's motor vehicle fuel taxes, as outlined in a task force report submitted to his office this week, and he also isn't backing down from postponing $200 million in state public works projects. "

The last time we had an economic slow time, Gov. Taft raised gas taxes and here!

The GOP needs to do what they say they will do when elected.

Another thought on this "task force". Do you ever remember a time when a "task force" supported a tax cut in their final report? No, because these "task forces" are filled with those with vested interests....interested, that is, in sucking more money out of your wallet.

Anytime you read phrases like this,

"Create a diverse and expanded portfolio of funding sources to finance all transportation modes"

or this

"Create a new bond financing program, complemented by an enhanced set
of financing tools, to provide increased and dedicated funding for all modes of transportation"

it's an attempt to divert your attention from what they really are, TAX hikes.

Here's their final report.

One of their ideas is to add a chip to your vehicle and tax you for the amount of miles you drive. On one hand this seems fair, since those who drive more potentially cause more damage to the roads. However, doesn't the gas tax accomplish this already without having George Orwell in your back seat?

Here's the paragraph:

"3. Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax:Ohioans understand that the state motor fuel tax is used to maintain roads and bridges. They know that for many years this tax has been the preferred method of funding highways in Ohio and elsewhere. As a consumption-based “user fee,” this tax collects money from those who use more motor fuel, and from those who presumably make greater use of the transportation system. Yet, consumption may not increase as fast as inflation, and therefore the purchasing power of the tax may decline over time. Also, with the increasing popularity of fuel-efficient vehicles, the yield of this tax can once again decline.
Therefore, the Task Force recommends that Ohio begin to explore moving to a vehicle-miles-of-travel (VMT) tax, which would maintain – perhaps be even more faithful to – the user-fee concept embedded in the motor fuel tax. Some states have begun to explore VMT taxes and U.S. DOT is already promoting pilot programs. In fact, Ohio has submitted a request to become one of the initial pilot states. As part of a move to a VMT tax, consideration should be given to vehicle weight, so that heavier vehicles that impose greater cost on both the highway system and the environment pay more. Most Task Force members agree that this innovative revenue generating program has substantial long-term potential."

In other words, they think they can take more of your money with a "VMT" tax vs. the current gas tax.

One last thought on "task forces". My belief is they are a waste of money. We already have experts at ODOT and our County Engineer garages (yes, I left Township garages out intentionally). Let them make their decisions without the input from folks that all want their special interests filled.

So much for not having much to say about this.............

Strickland vetoes SB 380. Accorn will be happy!

As expected our Governor has vetoed the bill that would have corrected the voting mess we had this past election.

earlier post

But since this election time confusion adds to democrat's chances of gaming the system, our Governor vetos the bill.

Accorn / Obamma / Franken ought to be proud of Ted.

Ted and Jennifer need to go.

Great Blog from Deleware County

Dave Yost from Delaware County does a great job with his blog. He is detailing the Strickland "plumbergate" story.

Senate Bill 380

This is a good change. Not sure why it took a catastrophe like our last election to bring this change about, though....someone should have seen this coming. Strickland needs to ignore the partisan Brunner and sign this bill.

"• Senate Bill 380, which would reduce early voting from 35 days to 20 days before an election and make other election-law changes that Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has said should not be rushed this year. Strickland, a fellow Democrat, has not specifically said he will veto the measure but will "take into consideration the secretary of state's concerns about the bill," said spokesman Keith Dailey.
By reducing early voting, legislative Republicans hope to eliminate "Golden Week," during which Ohioans were able to register and vote on the same day. The bill, which passed the Senate on a party-line vote, also addresses absentee ballot envelopes, voter database mismatches and partisan poll observers."

Top 'Joe the plumber' snoop quits

Still no calls by the media on what Strickland knew and when he knew it. If this were a Republican administration, the questioning would be non-stop until the Governor showed proof he/she was not involved. The standards are different when the dems are in charge, however.
